Does e-invoicing apply to me?
Answer up to three questions. You'll get a straight answer based on what the government has announced so far, and what to do next.
How the checker decides
The plans are tied to VAT invoices and to who you invoice. The government has said it will require "the use of electronic invoicing for all VAT invoices" for "business-to-business and business-to-government transactions from 2029".
| You are… | Invoicing… | Result |
|---|---|---|
| VAT registered | Other businesses or the public sector | Expected to apply from April 2029 |
| VAT registered | Homeowners and private customers only | Not expected to apply |
| Not VAT registered, but close to £90,000 | Other businesses or the public sector | Could apply once you register |
| Not VAT registered | Anyone | Not expected to apply |
On businesses that aren't VAT registered, the government's consultation response says "many of the smallest businesses who are not required and choose not to be registered for VAT will not be obliged to adopt this technology".
The government hasn't announced any phasing by business size or any exemption for small VAT-registered businesses. The roadmap due at the Budget on 28 October 2026 may say more.
